Based on its strategic objectives, the Unit of Health, Sexuality and Human Development and the Institute of Studies in Health, Sexuality and Human Development organized their work in four technical areas and two support areas:

Population-Based Studies

This area supports the development of applied public health studies with emphasis on sexual health, sexuality, and related themes in order to increase existing knowledge and to understand cultural, social, epidemiological and biomedical determinants in different population segments, especially in most vulnerable populations, so that the scientific community along with political decision-makers and civil society can use these studies as a reference.

Political – Programmatic Studies and Technical Assistance

This area develops multi-disciplinary scientific research in order to generate knowledge to improve public policy and programs with regard to health, sexuality and human rights. This area also evaluates the impact of health programs, incorporating different actors and promoting links between the State and civil society.

This area aims to strengthen the organization and leadership within vulnerable populations, encouraging spaces for articulation with other social actors to promote non-discrimination, equal opportunity and full exercise of human rights, with particular attention to comprehensive health care.

This area seeks to strengthen advocacy and lobbying for public policy related to health, sexuality and human rights, through the dissemination and discussion of scientific evidence with State and civil society stakeholders in order to develop communicational and cultural strategies to increase the training and commitment of key social actors with regard to the themes of the Unit/Institute.

Sexual Health Laboratory, LSS |

Located in the Faculty of Sciences at UPCH as part of the Laboratories of Research and Development in Science and Technology (LID), it specializes in HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections. Fully equipped with the latest generation technology, it works with immunodiagnostic tools, DNA and RNA amplification, for screening and monitoring, and conducting biological and epidemiological studies of HIV and STI. The Sexual Health Lab has Proficiency Certification from the College of American Pathologists, and its professionals have been trained in Peru and other countries. The laboratory works under international bio-safety norms and with an Automated Laboratory Information System.

Through the use of innovative technology, this area develops applications oriented to the needs of the research process, in collaboration with statisticians, researchers and other experts. The experience of this area comes from the development of cost-effective solutions in clinical trials, conferences, laboratory systems and program evaluation.
